‎‎‎‎‎‎‎How to decorate a cake with fondant for beginners

You know those beautiful and smooth cakes that look like you need a million years to create? ‎Well, they’re actually pretty easy to make with fondant paste.‎

‎‎Fondant: store bought or homemade?‎

Store-bought fondant is significantly more expensive than the one you can prepare at home. ‎And preparing fondant at home can be a lot easier than you think! So if you settle on ‎preparing fondant at home, prepare 500 g of basic dough by combining 1 tsp of gelatin ‎powder and 2 tbsp of cold water in a small pot. When thick, dissolve on a double boiler then ‎add a ¼ cup of corn syrup and 1 tbsp of glycerin. Stir in 1 tbsp of shortening and remove ‎from heat. Stir in 1 tsp of vanilla. In Masterchef Gourmet Pro kitchen machine bowl, add 2 ‎cups of powdered sugar. Start it on low and gradually add the gelatin mixture. When you ‎feel like the dough is getting sticky, gradually add 2 additional cups of powdered sugar. Mix ‎until you get a firm dough. You just saved at least half the time in kneading! Refrigerate ‎overnight.‎

‎‎Add a base underneath your fondant

Never cover a cake directly with fondant as it will leave an uneven texture and air bubbles. ‎Instead, save some buttercream or chocolate ganache or whatever frosting cream you ‎prepared with your kitchen machine, and spread all over your cake. Refrigerate to stiffen it a ‎bit.‎

‎‎‎‎Shape your fondant

Spread some cornstarch on your working space and then add the fondant paste. Press the ‎fondant with your hand into the shape you’re going for. Roll it out with a rolling pin and ‎make sure there are no air bubbles for the perfect texture.‎

‎Cover the cake like a pro

Lift the fondant paste up and center it over the cake. Keep it flat by unfolding the edges. ‎Starting with the top, smooth your cake to get rid of air bubbles. If you don’t own a fondant ‎smoother, you can save a handful of fondant paste and dip it in cornstarch. Workaround the ‎downside pressing the air down and out. Slice the outer edges carefully then refrigerate your ‎cake until it’s time to decorate it. Use a mixture of fondant and gum paste when decorating.‎
